Future Transportation – How Automation and Intelligent Systems Will Impact the Movement of People and Goods: Societal changes in how we live, play, shop, and do business are placing new demands on our aging, strained, and under-funded transportation system.   The development of new technologies such as vehicle automation offers hope as to how we will maintain or improve the efficiency and safety of moving goods and people.  This presentation will provide an overview of what changes are taking place and examples of how we are employing new machines and methods to address the current and future issues that impact transportation.

Speaker Bio:    Andy Alden serves as the Executive Director of the I-81 Corridor Coalition and leads the Eco-Transportation and Alternative Systems Research Group at the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute.  He is a registered professional engineer who has worked in the environmental and information technology fields, as well as the development and deployment of vehicle data acquisition systems.  His current focus is advancing safe and sustainable transportation through the application of emerging and alternative technologies.  Recent research has focused on automated “last mile” shuttles, road weather safety, bus transit efficiency, animal-vehicle conflict, applied road salt impacts, and the use of unmanned aerial systems in support of surface transportation.
